At Hunt & Gather, we make our small-batch biltong with high-polyphenol* cultures made from fermented plants. These powerful antioxidants help protect your body from free radicals* and support a healthy gut microbiome. The result is a biltong that’s richer in flavour, easier to digest, and crafted with real functional benefits* beyond just protein.

*Polyphenols

Natural plant nutrients that help your body stay healthy. They protect your cells, calm inflammation, feed your good gut bacteria, and make digestion smoother.

*Free Radicals

Unstable little molecules that your body makes every day. If there are too many, they can damage your cells. Antioxidants help neutralise them so your body stays healthy and protected.

*Functional Benefits

Extra health perks your body actually feels. For example: supporting your gut, keeping your energy levels steady, and enhancing your overall wellbeing.

ZERO ARTIFICIAL PRESERVATIVES. 100% GLUTEN FREE.

How is your biltong preserved without chemicals?

We rely on traditional air-drying methods, plant extracts that are high in polyphenols and probiotics (from fermented plants) to keep our biltong fresh, flavourful, and safe to enjoy.

Does Hunt & Gather biltong contain preservatives?

No. Hunt & Gather biltong is completely free from artificial preservatives. We don’t use potassium sorbate, nitrates, or any other artificial additives.

Are you trying to change biltong?

Neva. We grew up on biltong. Brown paper bags. Rugby fields. Road trips.

Ours is still grass-fed beef, vinegar, salt and spices. Air dried properly.

We just removed artificial preservatives and used natural fermentation instead.

Is this even “normale” biltong?

Ja, of course its "normale" biltong.

Real biltong is beef, vinegar, salt and air. That is exactly what ours is.

The only difference is we use fermentation instead of synthetic E-numbers. If anything, that makes it more traditional than some of the “normale” packs on shelves.

Which probiotics do you use?

We use Lactobacillus plantarum.

It is a well-researched, food-grade culture used globally in fermented foods and meat production.

The strain is known. Our method is not.

How we apply it is our intellectual property.

Why use probiotics in biltong?

Simple.

Fermentation is ancient. Artificial preservatives are modern.

We chose natural biology over synthetic chemistry.

Is this really the natural option?

Do yourself a favour…

Next time you are in a shop, flip a few biltong packs over.

Read the ingredient lists. Count the preservatives.

Then ask yourself why dried beef suddenly needs a chemistry lab.

Ours does not.

Why does it cost more?

Grass-fed beef costs more.

Small-batch production costs more.

Natural fermentation costs more.

Artificial preservatives are cheaper.

We would neva.

Is Hunt & Gather biltong gluten-free?

Absolutely. We don’t use any gluten-containing ingredients in our recipes.

What type of meat do you use?

We use premium South African beef from grass-fed cattle, carefully selected for its quality, tenderness, and rich flavour.

Is Hunt & Gather biltong Halaal?

Our biltong is made using Halaal-certified meat. However, please note that it is produced in a facility that is not Halaal-certified.

Who is Utzi?

Utzi is our wild-hearted caveman mascot, the original hunter gatherer with a taste for real biltong. He says no to BS ingredients and yes to flavour. Think of him as the guardian of honest snacking.
